Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Hair Serum

I haven't updated you on my hair growth in a bit- the end of July was probably the last update. Since then I have been trying a lot of different things to aid my newly longer locks. I have been dealing with frizz and humidity - things that normally don't happen when you have a pixie.

Since I have been *forced* to try other shampoos, I haven't been using my Peter Lamas shampoo and conditioner regularly. However, I have been using the Chinese Herbs Regenerating Scalp Serum every other night (on the nights before I wash my hair in the AM).

According to their website, This botanically-rich, advanced therapeutic treatment incorporates a proprietary blend of centuries-old traditional Chinese herbs. These herbs have proven effectiveness; stimulating and re-invigorating weakened hair and scalp to promote healthy hair growth while helping prevent further hair loss. In addition, this product utilizes the latest botanical-technology incorporating Swertia Extract and Apple Stem Cells. These potent ingredients are scientifically proven to promote healthier hair growth. The Chinese Herbs Regenerating Scalp Serum protects the scalp from toxins and DHT build-up while providing the desired visible result of thicker, fuller hair.

While my hair isn't growing as fast as it was when I was using the whole system, it is still growing much faster than normal. Here was my hair when I last did a length check - in July.

Three months later, after using the serum every other night, my hair is dramatically longer. I have also had a haircut where I lost quite a bit of volume, so the shape is more flattering.
The serum itself smells a little minty, is very fresh and is the consistency of water. I apply it all over my scalp and go to bed. It dries very quickly, doesn't make a mess couldn't be easier to use. It is also vegan and cruelty-free.

Without further adieu, here is me now.

I can almost get it in a pony tail! Sweet! I've come a long way since I started growing my hair in January!

Hard Candy Visibly Wet Shockingly Glossy Lip Pencil

I was recently checking out some offerings from Hard Candy and I couldn't resist picking up something called Visibly Wet Shockingly Glossy Lip Pencil. I chose the Centerfold color, which is a really nude taupe.

I had been hankering to pick up a pinky nude Lancome lipstick, but couldn't win the wrestling match between my lustful side and my "a $29 lipstick?" side. I was about to head back to Sephora to pick up the Lancome (it gets embarrassing going there so many times each week), when I spied this beauty.

This pencil had to have been around $6 and is definitely somewhere between a lip stick and a lip gloss. It is hydrating, shiny and lasts the same amount of time a lip gloss does. It's available in fifteen shades, from nude to red to pink. I am a tough judge of drug store makeup - probably because you can't test it first - and I would definitely go back for more of this nifty lipstick/lipgloss hybrid.

I bought this. Hard Candy doesn't test on animals.

Too Faced Pixie Perfect

Too Faced is one of those brands that I always check out and never buy. Somehow though, all of that has changed. I have been on a palette-purchasing super spree lately. While not truly a palette, this was shelved next to one so it came home with me.

Pixie Perfect is a great little intro to the brand. It comes with a quad of eye shadows, all in the brown/nude family, a split pan of blush and bronzer, a full size Glamour Gloss in Plush, a mini Eye Insurance Primer and Lash Injection mascara. All of these goodies are in a cute makeup bag.

(Sun Bunny, Papa Don't Peach)

The main reason I was drawn to this is my addiction to peach blush. This one, Papa Don't Peach, is my current favorite blush. It's bright, peachy and just the right sheen and opacity. Sun Bunny is a nice bronzer that also works well as a cheek contour shade on fair skinned gals like myself.

While I didn't expect to love it, I am now fixated on Glamour Gloss. This kit comes with Plush, a great peachy shade. It actually plumps the fine lines on my lips, with no tingle. When worn with Lip Insurance, it stays put. It does ok on its own too.

I was hoping Lash Injection would be the answer to how I can finally get long lashes without treatments, extensions or falsies. It isn't. Hummph. It's nothing special and it's clumpy.

(Split pan blush and bronzer, Eye shadow quad. Both come with large mirrors too!)

I am finding that I really like Too Faced's shadows. I recently picked up their Naked Eye kit (I know, I'm really late) and like how the light, subtle colors stay all day with some help from Shadow Insurance. This quad comes with four large colors (large, relatively speaking to the size of the shadows in the Naked Eye Palette.

(Not listed in order.)

The colors are Velvet Revolver, Enchanted Forest, Totally Toasted and Peach Fuzz.

This is a lovely little holiday offering. It is definitely making me want to check out more from Too Faced! Thoughts on this one?

Too Faced doesn't test on animals. I bought this.

New Buxom Rock Stars and City Slickers

Buxom Big and Healthy Lip Polish is one of my favorite glosses. I love the shine, I love the minty tingle and I love the color selection! This season, there are two noteworthy Buxom collections you need to check out.
(Blanche, Gabby, Julie, Tonya)

The first is the Rock Star Collection. This collection of four mini glosses is available at Boutiques and online. This set includes Julie, Tonya, Gabby and Blanche.

(Tonya, Julie, Blanche, Gabby
More pics on my knuckles. My wrist has not yet recovered from whatever I did to it.)

Julie is a light peach shimmer, Tonya is a pinkish coral with a bit of sparkle, Gabby is a gorgeous wine and Blanche is the perfect for a light holiday shimmer. My favorites are the new Tonya and the previously released Gabby. Tonya is slightly unexpected and Gabby is just a perfect plum. These colors, while not that bold, are gorgeous and can go a lot of ways, especially when you layer them with different lines, lip sticks or other Buxom glosses. Gabby is a must-have and Tonya is exclusive to this set (along with Julie and Blanche) and also makes my must-have set. (Hint: Loxy! Add this one to the holiday list, please!)

Next up are the City Slickers. This collections is a Sephora exclusive and contains four Buxom glosses in the same smaller style and four coordinating Lip Sticks. You get Bombay and Michelle, Vienna and Denise, Fresno and Brandi, and Marrakech and Amber. The beauty is this kit is the virtual wardrobe of lip looks you can create with the possible combination of colors.

From Top: Bombay & Michelle, Bombay, Michelle - Vienna & Denise, Vienna, Denise - Fresno & Brandi, Fresno, Brandi - Marrakech & Amber, Marrakech, Amber

While Marrakech has been a staple of my lip wardrobe for a while (It's a perfect nude base on my fair lips), my favorite combo in this collection may just be Vienna and Michelle.

(Vienna solo)

Vienna, a candy pink Lip Stick is too pink-pink on me by itself. But when paired with Michelle, a medium pink gloss, it becomes the perfect not too sweet pink on my fair skinned, red headed self.

(Vienna & Michelle)

For an uber-glam look, pair the Fresno Lip Stick with Amber. It's a much darker and evening glam look than what I normally get from Buxom.

(Fresno & Amber)

It's long-wearing, perfect for a night out and fits perfectly in a clutch.

What is your favorite way to make the most of your Buxom collection? Tell me your favorite combos! Pick up the Rock Stars from Bare Escentuals and get yer self some City Slickers from Sephora.

Buxom does not test on animals. I received the City Slickers Collection for the purposes of review. I just checked out the Rock Stars in the store.

Reviva Labs Soy Rejuvenating Serum

I recently gave MamaLox the chance to put on her review hat and test a product for me that is aimed at mature, post-menopausal skin. Who knew she would be equally excited about photographing the product for me? I asked MamaLox to test Soy Rejuvenating Serum by Reviva Labs on her face for six weeks. After I answered her skeptical questions (Yes, it is a real thing. No, it shouldn't burn. Yes, other people read this besides you. No, I won't tell anyone your real name.), she was game.

The Soy Rejuvenating Serum was designed with mature skin in mind. Knowing that estrogen levels drop as we age, this anti-aging serum adds back a bit of the estrogen, via soy. Since I don't have quite the skin this may work best for, I was excited that MamaLox agreed to help out.

MamaLox is in her 60's and has beautiful, clear skin. Despite loving to garden, she doesn't wear a daily SPF, but doesn't have sun-damaged skin, from a melasma perspective. Her skin tone is peachy and fairly radiant, with no trace of the sun spots I have. (Thanks, Dad.) What she does have are deeply set wrinkles and skin that is no longer taut, damage no doubt caused by sun exposure. She used the Soy Rejuvenating Serum by Reviva Labs for six weeks.

Before I tell you the result, I should let you know about MamaLox's facial care habits. She washes daily with whatever cleanser she has. She usually doesn't bother with an anti-aging cream or an SPF. Every now and then, she'll try something from the drugstore, but isn't likely to buy skincare in a department store. (I suspect she doesn't understand where my fascination with cosmetics comes from, in the same way I can't comprehend why people do yard work for fun.) She sometimes wears cosmetics, but is usually au naturel.

She has used the Serum for about six weeks (so far). For the first two weeks, she asked me why she was bothering. And then somewhere around the 17-day mark, she noticed that her wrinkles were slightly relaxed and had lessened. She noticed her skin looked more alive and radiant than usual. The improvements in her texture and wrinkles continued to improve as she continued to use the serum.

She also said, my hand to the gods, "I may even buy it when this runs out."

If that isn't an endorsement, I don't know what is.

Post Review Side Note:
When I was researching this product to learn a bit about the brand, I discovered that Reviva Labs is a secret darling brand of many bloggers. When I discovered this post on Diva Debbi's blog, I knew what the next product I need to investigate would be. And yes, MamaLox, that is a real, unretouched photo. We Beautyland Tour Bloggers aren't the kind to lie, falsify photos or do anything but tell the truth. We'd get kicked off of the tour if we did.

Tarte Jewelry Box

I had mentioned this gorgeous box of delights last week, after getting a sneak peek of holiday offerings from a variety of companies. This has to be one of the highlights (if not the highlight) of all of the products I have gotten to see so far.

This Jewelry Box from Tarte offers up an impressive amount of products for a really reasonable price. For $52, you'll get:

16 all new and limited edition shimmer eyeshadows
16 all new and limited edition matte eyeshadows
Park Ave Princess Bronzer
A soft pink highlighting powder
8 New lip glosses
5 New Liners
A wearable necklace (!)

Here is the great news. These shadows seem to be Tarte's regular quality, creamy eyeshadow. The liners are long-wearing. The lip glosses are smooth and wear for a decent amount of time. The bad news is that I'm not sure why the normal gal would need to buy anything else after getting this treasure. (However, I am sure by tomorrow I will come up with a good reason to buy more!)

Take a look inside the Jewelry Box:

The chain on the front comes off and is a wearable necklace.

The top level of colors are the 16 limited edition shimmer shadows. These shadows are sheer and very natural. All of the colors are easy for almost everyone to wear.

The Second layer is 16 limited edition matte shadows.

The third layer is the Highlighter, Bronzer, and eight lip colors.

Eight Glosses. The only downside is that you can't take them with you.

Swatched in the same order they appear in the palette.

Five Liners, including a matte black and a black with a little sheen

Black Sheen, Antique Olive, Plum, Golden Bronze, Matte Black Liners
(named by me for this review.)

Of course because this is Tarte, it is cruelty-free, paraben-free, synthetic color- and dye-free and contains all of the skinvigorating ingredients you know and love. This gem hits the shelves of Sephora this week. If you pick one up as a gift, it's going to be hard to give away. Don't say I didn't warn you!

I bought this. Tarte would never test on animals.

New From Buxom: Samantha's Smoky Eye

Buxom is one of my favorite lines this year. The Stay There shadows will definitely make my must-have list at the end of the year. Buxom (and BE) have a ton of great goodies coming out for the holiday. I've gotten my hands on a few of them and will share all of the details!

The first collection of new goods I have been able to play with is Samantha's Smoky Eye. This kit, which is a Sephora exclusive, contains four items:

Big & Healthy Lip Polish in Samantha
Smoky Eye Stick in Smokin' Pistol
Buxom Smoky Eye Brush
Buxom Lash Mascara in Blackest Black

At first glance, this kit doesn't appear to be that different from many of the other kits. However, this kit deserves a second look. Let's start with the brush.

This Buxom brush is perfect for creating a host of looks. Obviously, it's a great choice for the look this kit inspires. Its thick, yet tapered brush is great for making a heavy line, close to the lashes. The fact that the bristles are short give the brush the muscle needed to smoke out the Eye Stick. It also works really well as a detailed crease brush. (I love the Buxom Stay There brush as well. If you don't have that and wear a lot of cream shadows, check it out.)

Next up, the Samantha Buxom Lip Polish. This shade is a beautiful, creamy nude. It is slightly more opaque than I had expected, and at first it seemed like it would be close to clear.

But it isn't. Instead, it is a creamy pink, diluted to have more shine than color. This color is slightly different from some of the other Buxom colors. It doesn't have a lot of sparkle and it isn't full color.

It reminds me of a nude lip, à la Sophia Loren of the late 1950s.

The real reason to pick up this set is the Smoky Eye Stick. This is different from their previous eyeliners for several reasons. First, it is thick. Like quarter of an inch thick. Second, it is a rich, thick black that isn't the usual liner-like texture. Think super-kohl. This is very black, slightly tacky, and very smudge-able. You'll need a good makeup remover to get this off. Since it's from Buxom, it also has a built-in sharpener, which makes keeping a fine tip on the thick liner easy. I found the best way to use this is to line gently and then smudge it out with the brush. Or, lightly use the brush to get pigment from the stick and apply with the brush.

Finally, you also get a Buxom Mascara in Blackest Black. I like to prep lashes with the Flawless Definition and then use Buxom on top to really make lashes stand out.

I created one of my favorite looks ever with this kit to show you how it looks. I wanted to do a slight twist on the Sophia Loren cat eye, so I am adding a pop of color to the vintage look. To start, I filled in my brow with BE's Auburn brow powder. Then I used Stay-There in Poodle as a base color (over the BE Eye Primer). Next, I used Chameleon from the middle of my lid to the crease and on the outer V. Then I lightly drew a medium thick line from slightly outside of the outer corner of my eye, to the middle of my eye. I then used the brush to coax the Smokey Eye Stick into a classic cat. I finished up with Buxom Lash. (Which gave me incredible length I wasn't expecting!) Here are the results.

What do you think? Having worn this to work, I can tell you that it didn't budge at all in more than 10 hours. Are you going to add this to your must-have list or wait and see what else is around the corner? Once I get the hang of working with the Eye Stick, I am sure I am going to need more colors!

This was provided for review. Buxom doesn't test on animals.

Meet Brow Artist Joey Healy

Joey Healy is a professional makeup artist for all mediums. He recently did a layout for a popular young women's fashion magazine, created stunning looks for his many cutting-edge clients and had the chance to work with some amazing models. But that isn't his favorite thing. Some people fixate on doing great hair. Others are know for their perfect smokey eye. Joey's specialty? Brow shaping.

Joey believes that everyone's eyes can be enhanced by finding the perfect brow shape and look. The right hair here or there can help play up your bone structure, make your eyes pop or camouflage problems like wide- or close-set eyes. But going one step further, Joey spends time with each client showing them how to achieve the perfect brow. Your brows shouldn't look fake, overdone or harsh. Filling in with the right pencil or powder (or both!) can make the difference between looking polished or dull. I know it's hard to believe that a few hairs and the right product can make such a difference, but they do! Even if you don't have much to work with (I definitely don't), there is no denying brows shape your face.

I had a few moments to chat with Joey and wax poetic about his brow philosophy.

Me: What is your preferred method of brow shaping?
JH: I don't wax. Nothing is wrong with waxing- it's fast, it's clean, it's easy. But it isn't as precise as I like to be. While it's a little better, I don't like threading either. I know people may not always believe me, but the devil is in the details and each hair is important in how I shape the brows. I like to tweeze. There is less, if any at all, down time. You don't have to worry about medications reacting with hair removal.

Me: Even on people like me, who have more peach fuzz than brow?
JH: Especially on people like you. The peach fuzz can help set up the structure of the brow, so you may not always want to get rid of all of it. It depends on the person. But yes, I have ways of dealing with peach fuzz, and it's almost always with tweezers.

Me: I love to experiment and try out the trends. But I'm not sure about brow trends. I worry when brows are thicker, I'll look fake and when they are thinner, my brows may not grow back. Should I be more adventurous?
JH: I think everyone has a shape that looks best on them. Experimenting is fun, but you have to be careful. Sometimes if you over-tweeze, the hair may not grow back. It's hard to achieve a very full brow or change your arch and still look natural. The goal at the end of the day is to look and feel beautiful. Trends are fun, but they don't work for everyone. What's the old adage? If it ain't broke? I encourage everyone to try the trends. Just be sure they can easily wash off when they don't work.

Me: Tell me a little about how your brow service is different from other estheticians.
JH: First off, I come to you. I go to homes, offices, or anywhere I'm needed. I spend more time than your typical esthetician - thirty minutes or more. I work with you to develop the right shape for your face and then remove the hair with tweezers, to give you the exact and perfect shape for your face. Finally, I show you how to make the most of your brows with pencils and powder. When I leave, you have the skills to get that professional look each day, until it is time for a brow shaping touch up.

Me: You mentioned powder and pencil. Do you actually use both on most people?
JH: I think you need to use both. The right pencil gives you the look of the actual hairs. The right powder fills it in and make the shape perfect. I think you usually need both to get the best look.

Me: What are your favorite products to use?
JH: I love so many things. Sadly, some of them are slightly hard to find, so I am always stocking up when I get the chance! I love Shu Uemura Hard Formula Brow Pencil in "Seal Brown", unless you are a redhead, this is a very universal color. For a warmer brow pencil, I love Kevyn Aucoin Brow Pencil in "Brunette". For a soft powder fill (which can be used in conjunction with the above), Smashbox Brow Tech in Taupe is definitely one of my go-to products. It's universal and comes with a setting wax in the split pan. I also prefer to use a disposable spooli brush to shape brows, instead of a comb. The bristles help the brows fall into the right place.

Me: What about tweezers? I am sure you would prefer your clients not touch up their own brows, but sometimes, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Do the type of tweezers really make a difference?
JH: Of course. The same way that a stylist prefers certain shears, I have my favorite tweezers. I prefer Shu Uemura & Tweezerman tweezers. And not that you should EVER do brow trimming yourself, but when I do it, I prefer to use Shu Umera brow trimming scissors for precision.

Me: What is the one thing you wish women knew about brows?
JH: That a well done brow will highlight your eyes, bring out your cheeks and frame your face. The devil is in the details and that is certainly very true for your brows.

Me: How can someone make an appointment with you to have their brows shaped?
JH: People can contact me through my website. I am available by appointment to meet with women in the NYC area. For a limited time, I would be happy to offer Gouldylox Readers a discount on my services. My normal brow shaping is $55. For Gouldylox readers, from now until the end of November, I will shape their brows and teach them how to make them look their best for $40*.

In the NYC area? Take Joey up on his offer to show you how to get your best brow possible. He is full of tips, advice and great stories! I wish I was in town, if for no other reason to than to get his advice in person on how to make the most of my scarce brows. If you get the opportunity to go, please let me know how it went and what tips you learned!

Paint It Black. The UD Black Palette

I recently picked up this Black Palette from Urban Decay. I love the allure of the dark, gritty colors. But, as is the problem with so many dark, dark colors, it's hard to include real color that shows up once you apply it.

(They look deceptively light in the pan. Looking at them in this picture makes me feel like I should have tried harder to make it work.)

This palette came with six shades and a mini Eden primer. All of the colors start out really dark with a hint of color. Then after a few short hours, they end up just being blackish with a few sparkles. I tried it with Eden as a primer. The colors looked a little on the dull side.

(The top are the shadows when applied over Pixie Epoxy. The bottom is over UD's Eden.)

I tried this with Pixie Epoxy and the colors looked gorgeous. Then I wore it out of the house and by the end of the day, my eye was a smudgy mess that was basically black. I also tried it with Tarina Tarantino's Dollskin with Pearl Glow primer. The results were still the same. The colors faded to black. I tried it by using a brush. I tried patting it on. I tried foiling. I even tried blotting it on with my finger. Each attempt led to the same result. Black shadow with a few sparkles.

(I so wanted to love and wear these colors. They look nice with the Pixie Epoxy. They just didn't hold up. I really, really tried.)

I wanted to love this. Especially after the Naked Palette. But it just isn't the same. These shadows are super-pigmented. Maybe so pigmented the only thing they can do is fade to black. You may like this if you are addicted to dark colors and don't mind your shadows getting a worn look. I suppose you could think of these shadows as giving you a "distressed denim" look for your eyes? Like the little bit of worn pocket on Old Navy jeans? Can that be a shadow look? If it can be a look, this might be the gold standard in shadows to give you a worn look.

For once, I just don't have much nice to say. OOH! I know. The Black Dog color is a perfect matte black. You can't get any darker than this matte black.

There. That's all I got.

I bought this and then took it back. UD doesn't test on animals. At least that's a good thing.

Bare Escentuals High Shine Eyecolor UPDATED!

Today at Ulta, I discovered the new Bare Escentuals High Shine Eyecolor. These shadows are slightly different for BE, so my curiosity was piqued. Instead of being a loose mineral shadow that you apply with a brush, these come in a container, with a built-in, wand-like applicator.

To apply the color, you just shake the little jar, and gently shake off the applicator as you pull the wand out of the bottle. Then you can apply these high shine, richly pigmented colors directly to your lids, so they are great for on-the-go-gals. They are available in six different colors:

Patina, a rich dark green
Electric, a bright blue
Glisten, a shiny nude
Frost, a so-shiny-it's-almost-a-mirror platinum
Moonshine, a gorgeous plum
Bronzed, a super high-shine tigers eye bronze

(From my pinky knuckle: Moonshine, Patina, Glisten, Electric, Bronzed and Frost.)

Here is how the colors looked swatched on my knuckles. Why my knuckles you ask? I hurt my wrist (no idea how) and my wrist and most of my forearm have to be kept in a brace. Since I was on a solo mission without Loxy, the knuckles were the only part of me that was swatchable.

(From my pinky knuckle: Moonshine, Patina, Glisten, Electric, Bronzed and Frost.)

These retail for $16 each. They are available at BE and Ulta. I have a feeling I will be adding several of these to my collection. Thoughts?

UPDATED: Today I got the chance to actually wear Patina. I started with the BE Brightening Eye Primer, all over my lower lid, up to the crease. I used Patina as the main lid color and blended the top edge of color with BE's Moonlight. I also lined the top and bottom with the Expresso Big and Beautiful Liner. I really liked how smoothly the applicator applied the color . The wand is also shaped in a way that makes applying it easy, fast and with even coverage. I didn't have fallout issues and as of now (4 hours later) my color is still as strong and has not yet begun to move or fade.

While this color is shiny, it isn't as shiny as colors like Frost. I think this is perfectly wearable for all ages during the day. Some other colors may not translate as well, but it's all in how you wear it! I expect this to last for 10-12 hours with no problem. Let me know if you have picked any of these up yet and tell me what you think!

I did end up buying Patina, otherwise I just swatched these in the store. BE does not test on animals.
