Yesterday, I got the chance to spend some time with Monica, the color mixologist (my name for what she does, not hers) for GIELLA at a Baltimore-based salon, About Faces Day Spa and Salon. I made two incredibly cool products, but after the reaction to my Blushing Orchid Liquid Lipstick on Facebook, I wanted to get you the details.
I'll give you more scoop about GIELLA (the line lives at Henri Bendel's) and her custom blended makeup in another post. In a few quick words, GIELLA offers custom blended cosmetics; if you can imagine it, you can make it. Have an old lipstick you can't live without, even though the company stopped making it? GIELLA can dupe it. I could have spent the entire day there, creating anything and everything.
I love lipsticks and really wanted to make my own. So instead of giving Monica an easy task, I decided to up the difficulty exponentially. I have a hard time wearing purples. As a very fair redhead, it's easier for a purple to go sideways on me than any other color. But when the color is perfect, it's magical. Monica and I decided to try to make the perfect orchid color for my skintone. It couldn't be too dark or too light. It couldn't be too pink, either. I wanted a combination of a gloss and a lipstick and I wanted it to make my pale skin and blue eyes pop--which means I really wanted a blue undertone to the gloss (that will make your teeth look whiter, too!).
We started with a pinky-purple pigment, added a gorgeous violet liquid, a lot of blue shimmer and some kind of liquid-silver pigment and voila! Blushing Orchid Liquid Lipstick was born. I even got to choose a touch of aromatherapy to add to my creation. I chose peppermint, because I love the kick a little mint gives a lip product. This peppermint won't burn or plump; it's just a nice little touch of mint.
If you want to order Blushing Orchid Liquid Lipstick, you can order the exact same shade I created by calling About Faces in Towson, MD at 410-828-8666. Ask for Monica and tell her you want Blushing Orchid (or the Gouldylox Orchid, if you forget the name). She'll make it for you and ship it out, lickety-split. If you ask nicely, she may even add a different scent for you, if mint isn't your thing. Blushing Orchid Liquid Lipstick retails for $30.
Call About Faces Day Spa and Salon and they'll take care of you. Or, if you live in Baltimore, make an appointment to meet with Monica and make your perfect shade. If you are in NYC, stop by Bendel's and have fun mixing!
