Weight Loss Tip #9: Exercise Like You Mean It

Not a doctor or smarty-pants exercise person. Please see a real doctor before beginning any kind of weight loss or exercise plan. Contains affiliate links.

It's a surprise weight loss Thursday check-in (instead of our usual Fridays)! How was your week? Did you lose? Or try some kind of crazy easy, tasty and on-plan meal? A few of you have been sending me photos of your Gouldylox-inspired meals--I love it!! Post your on-plan meals ala Gouldylox with #GouldyloxEats and share your ideas. You know I'm eating the same faux-meatball sandwich again, so inspire me to try something else!

My week was not great. I made it through the second week of maintenance at Weight Watchers, but this is tough. It's weird how four extra points make you feel "points-rich", like you can go crazy as long as you can account for it.

Plus, honestly, I'm a little worried I'll lose my mojo. But that is a convo for another time.

Today, we're talking about the big, nasty E. The thing that's made me proclaim, "I'd rather be eaten by sharks" or I'd rather eat my own eyeballs" too many times to count.

Exercise.

I get that people love it. Endorphins and stuff and whatnot; it sounds great. But almost every time I get ready to strap on my gym shoes, I lose momentum. I need a nap. I think the word "exercise" in my mind and I instantly go "meh" or worse. I'm defeating myself before I even begin.

At some point, we changed how we viewed exercise. When we were younger, it meant playing and having fun. Then everything became about a sport, not just having fun and we found something fun to do while sitting. Now exercise, to a whole lot of us, means playing a sport or doing something mundane. No wonder so many of us aren't overly motivated to hop on an elliptical. Exercise seems like an obligation that only a lucky, a very few, seem to truly enjoy.

So while it's true that I lost the equivalent of a fourth grader without doing much exercise, that doesn't mean that I've just been laying on the couch. Laying on the couch (and Oreos) are what caused me to gain weight in the first place. You can lose weight, but if you don't exercise, it's harder to be healthy. But getting started feels impossible. Trust me, I know. I am not a fan. But please stick with me and hear me out.

The key to jump-starting your fitness routine is to find something you like to do and just do it.

Lame, right? Hear me out. You don't have to become a runner or join an MMA gym (although the ability to toss people around is a fun skill to own). But think outside of the box. Think about something you liked to do years ago. Now make it active; like literally figure out a way to move while doing it. Think about it. Figured it out? Good. Now add music! Go with it!

Here's what I do:

Play Fruit Ninja Kinect on the XBOX.
While hardcore jumping on a mini-trampoline/urban rebounder.
With arm weights.
To my favorite playlist.

I call it jumping and I don't even think of it as exercise. "I gotta go jump and do some pilates," like "jumping" is a thing that people do. I mean, maybe it is. I don't know, it sounds ridiculous and that is partially why I love it. It's my really silly thing and I look forward to it. I jump. I'm a jumper. I didn't start at the level jumper I am right now. Oh no. I had to work up to that. I started with aggressive Fruit Ninja-ing. Then I added some little steps while I chopped. Then I decided I needed to dance and added a trampoline. Then I turned down the volume and added my own playlist. My arms were flailing around so I added weights. Now it's like actual exercise and I have to be careful not to work out too much on the high side of my heart rate. How did that even happen? Be fun. Get silly. Do something.

If you find something you like, you'll start to like how it feels when your body moves. You'll get stronger and healthier. You'll want to move more. And if you can make it fun, it'll stick. And then you've got this.

Tell me your ideas and share your deliciously super simple meal ideas with #GouldyloxEats! Have a fantastic week my little sisters! You can do it!

  1. Amazing tips. I'll do- take the stairs instead of the elevator; walk to the bus, train, or all the way to the office; window-shop with my best friend rather than sit over coffee. Taking the dog out, gardening and even housecleaning all increase the number of calories you expend. You don't have to go for a jog (although that would help!) to speed up weight loss. Twenty minutes of moderate exercise a day means you'll burn approximately 700 calories.
