It's Makeup Wars Monday and we are talking about illuminators. While I'm definitely favoring a more natural look and stepping away from the InstaContour look of last year, finding the right highlighters can be tricky.
|This is strong and works quickly. Be sure to start with an application every other day and listen to your skin.|
Start with skin that does that heavy lifting for you. Jan Marini's new Luminate Face Lotion relies on a blend of peptides, retinol, skin smoothers that seem to finally tackle sun damage and blotchy skin. If you have yellow splotches or light brown patches that haven't budged with other products, this may be the product you've been waiting for. Just check out the before and afters!
Once your skin is in shape, hit the highpoints of your face with one of my favorite illuminators. Use a light touch and a fan brush, barely kissing the cheekbones, brow bone, and the top of your chin and nose.
For a natural touch that glows, look for a product that provides a touch of sheen, not full blown glimmer or sparkles.
Watts Up is my favorite Benefit product of all time. This champagne highlighter in a cream to powder formula gives a great golden glow for all skin colors. $30
Hourglass continues to be the king of ambient lighting powders and their new Strobe Lighting Powders live up to the hype. This does have the tiniest of sparkle, but the overall effect is gorgeous. They can be used wet or dry, depending on your look. My favorite? Iridescent. $38
Laura Geller 's Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminators bring a touch of shimmer to the skin, with serious staying power. Gilded Honey looks incredibly natural and the shape of the powder helps pump the brakes on looking too shiny. $26
If you're looking to save a little, the Sleek MakeUP Highlighting Palette in Solstice is what you are looking for. You'll get a creamy nude highlighter, a pinky iridescent shade, a glowing gold and a bronze shimmer. $14.99
But not all highlighters are considered equal. Be sure to skip Touch In Sol Bright Spot Highlighter. It does nothing and I wish I had remembered to return it. I also didn't care for the new NYX Strobe of Genius. It's too dusty and left my skin looking flat and shiny.
