SAMY Fat Foam Hair Color (Plus a new update!)

My hair is going through a change. Not only am I having goat hair* issues, but I am having a hard time coloring my hair at home. The color isn't adhering evenly to my hair and in many instances, the color is coloring the gray at all. Sometimes I am left with a murky swath of hair that is a dull ashy brown and other times, I am left with a yellowy gray swath of hair that is the telltale sign of hair color gone wrong. In short, nothing is covering my gray.

I decided to give SAMY Fat Foam a try because 1) it's a different kind of hair color and 2) I had heard that it covered gray really well. What makes it different? Instead of being a cream, you mix a liquid and a powder together to make a foam. You then apply the foam to your hair and wait for a 30-40 minutes and rinse and condition. I used the Medium Reddish Brown. Here is a photo essay of my hair coloring experience. (Photos are courtesy of Loxy, who sacrificed his Call of Duty teammates to take these photos at the precise time I was ready to color. Thanks Sgt. Loxy!)

This is the color I used.

This is what it comes with: Directions, shampoo and conditioner, powder, liquid, mixing cup and gloves.

You pour the liquid into the cup first.

Then you add the powder. Next you shake it for thirty seconds (with the cap on). When you take the cap off, it looks a little like a foamy drink. But don't drink it.

(Loxy must not be the first person who thought it looked tasty.)

You then apply the foam to the roots of your hair.

This is shockingly easy and not anywhere as messy as you might think. It's also a really fast application.

After you apply it to your roots, you gently apply it to the rest of your hair, pressing the color into the hair shaft. Then you wait the directed amount of time (30-40 minutes) and shampoo and condition with the enclosed packets. The foam grips each strand of hair and doesn't drip at all. This was actually a neater application for me than with my usual at-home brush and creme color method. It also seemed like a much faster application than what I usually do. I was a little surprised by the ease of this at home hair color. I would definitely use this again!

Here is my hair after I shampooed, conditioned and styled. My hair is a vibrant, vibrant red. I am SHOCKED at how well it covered my roots. I could make the argument that it covered my roots too well, making the hair that was gray much redder than the ends of my hair (which would make sense, as the gray hair is a very different color from the rest of my hair). After a week or so, the color on the roots faded slightly and everything is now basically one tone.

I loved the experience of coloring my hair with Fat Foam. I am shocked by how well it covered my color-resistant grays. I do have two small issues: 1) the packets of shampoo and conditioner are way too small to use if you have hair that is any longer than mine or overly porous. 2.) The red continued to run when rinsed for a few days. While this isn't that uncommon with reds, it would be nicer to hold on the color a little longer.

That said, my hair is now a lovely shade of red and it matches from root to tip. This was definitely one of the easiest ways to color hair and without any additional dryness or damage from the process. I would definitely use this again!

SAMY Fat Foam is available in ten different shades at WalMart and retails for less than $10. Have you tried this? Let me know! Hey, if you don't mind, would you please click the stumble button below? Thanks!

UPDATE!

I needed to color my hair again, about 3.5 weeks after I colored it the first time. While I really liked the auburn shade of red I had gotten last time, I wanted to be slightly less auburn and a little more on the orange/red side. Since I wanted to use this product again, I decided to make my own custom color.

First of all, I can say with certainty that SAMY does not suggest you do this on your own. If you are not a hair adventurist with a decent background in hair related chemistry, then stop reading. And for the love of dogs, do not try this on your own. If you do, then don't blame me when it goes wrong.

Now that we have gotten the disclaimer out of the way, here is what I did. I bought two boxes of SAMY Fat Foam. One in the same color I had used before, Medium Reddish Brown and I also purchased Light Golden Brown. I used a hair color measuring cup to create a 50/50 mix of the two powders. You have to be VERY careful doing this to make sure you maintain the right powder to liquid ratio, or all bets are off. In my measuring cup, one half of the powder contained in one small bottle came out to 20 cc's (I think it was 20 on the cc side). I added the second powder to total 40 cc's. I then mixed and applied according to the directions.

Success!! My hair is a less auburn color and is slightly more of an red/orange color. I took an after picture in front of the same (unhelpful) dark brown door so you can measure it against my hair color I did a few weeks ago. The door makes it look a little more auburn that I think it looks in person. But for comparison sake, here it is.

Here are the colors side by side. It's a small difference, but I like it.

  5. I would like to know if this product would be safe for someone who has hair dye allergies. I am totally allergic to hair dyes, thank you

  6. This is still a hair color. You could try a strand/patch test to see if you have a reaction. However, if you know you have an issue, sadly, I would suggest you avoid it altogether.

  7. 8. ok ok ok - I have mine sitting next to me! N9 Light Blond - one problem - I have a large head - lots and lots of hair....and it is thick AND - it is now past my shoulders - bangs past my chin - and I mention this only because at 45 I have longed for long straight hair all my life - so shortly I will head out to buy box 2 - (I used 2 last time) so don't ask what I was thinking - but after reading and seeing this post I am excited to get my roots lighter and the grey covered - i will bookmark - and update later!!!

  9. My natural hair color used to be dark brown. I haven't colored it in years. Currently it is salt and pepper, probably close to 50/50 gray to brown. I decided to try this product and went to the store to see the selection. I picked medium brown because in the past when using dark brown colors, my hair turned black. Of course, in the past, I wasn't as gray. But anyway, I wanted to play it safe and try the medium brown. Now after reading your story I am wondering if I'm going to get a lot of red since this is only a medium brown. I just don't know which color to try. I don't want black hair, but at the same time, I don't want it to possibly be reddish. Any suggestions anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I mixed mine with Medium REDDISH brown, which is really red. If you want to avoid red in your hair, stay away from colors marked warm or golden. Instead opt for tones than mention ash. I don't think SAMY makes a huge number of colors. If you use the medium brown over your salt and pepper hair, I would THINK it would just be dark brown. But if your hair tends to go red, then it could go red. If in doubt, maybe you should try a different brand that has a NEUTRAL or ASH medium brown...

BTW- I'm not a stylist or a pro, just a hair enthusiast. When in doubt, check with your stylist.

  11. Thanks for the info. I just hate coloring my hair and that's why it's been salt and pepper for so long. But when I saw a commercial for this brand, it looked a lot easier, so I'm willing to give it a try. My daughter suggested mixing the medium brown and the dark brown, as my hair is long and I will need two bottles of it anyway. So I might give that a try. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks again!

  12. An adventurous hair gal like myself! I love it. I don't think SAMY intends for people to mix their colors, but it worked out fine for me. If you have a lot of hair (more than mine) then 2 boxes will probably be needed anyway. Let me know how it goes! (btw- the darker the color, the better the gray coverage)

  14. I used this the other day- light brown shade- and was very happy w results. My hair looks glossy, not drab like when I use other products. You r right about the mixing though- I worried it would not come out right as there was a bunch of stuff on the bottom and I even used an old spoon to mix on top of shaking. Anyway hope this lasts longer than other products- I even use shampoo for colored hair but gray still comes back too soon. Why are they only selling this in Walmart until 2011? Say that in magizine ad and wondered why. MG

  15. NO idea. I wish it was at Target- I shop there much more often than I do at Walmart. I am glad it worked out for you. I've been really happy with my color!

  16. I went to WalMart today to look at it, but since I am menstrating, I can't use it. It actually says that on the box. I love SAMY's other products. But I need an ash brown so my hair doesn't pick up too much red. The picture of the second try is just perfect.

  17. I am trying it...the color is medium blonde....they didn't have anything lighter (grrr). I'm actually trying to cover the PINK I had.....So, we shall see what I get. After 10 minutes, my hair is looking BROWN! Oh my! I'm a blonde...I'll update in a bit...

  18. I have read all the pro's and con's on this color. I have decided to give it a try and choose the R5 Medium Reddish Brown. I am not good with all of the other hair color products, always make a mess. I did this on my own and had no mess at all. I like having more of a reddish tint to my hair and this color turned oout GREAT for me. My hair is normally dark brown and gray. It covered the gray great and the color at the roots is a little lighter but I know it will eventually blend in together. I think it is a GREAT product and will continue to use it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well crap...it got rid of the pink, but turned it an ashy green color and it's super dried out now! Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  20. They need to make lighter blondes!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yikes is right! I don't know anything about getting rid of pink hair. I know adding ash to reds can turn hair green or gray. Sallys sells somethin g that removes colour, but you might want to ask a pro.

  22. I wanted to use this color because I have never used at home color before but I don't think I would like having it that dark- not to say it doesn't look wonderful on you.I have medium auburn hair already so I would imagine it wouldn't turn out exactly like yours did. What color is your hair naturally?

    ReplyDelete
  23. My natural hair at this point is grey. It use to be blonde. When I dyed my hair, my overall hair color was medium reddish brown.

  24. Ok, i have it on my hair right now.... after reading all of these comments I am really curious to see what is going to happen. LOL I really llike the idea of having

  26. I received my Samy Fat Foam yesterday afternoon and could not wait to try it myself. I used Medium Brown this morning and it looks better now with this product then when I was 16. BTW, I am 50. It was so easy to use. I LOVE LOVE LOVE SAMY Fat Foam Hair color. I would love to find this in stores and not have to use mail service. As long as this product is not sold in stores, I will be ordering online.

  27. This is sold at Walmart, have you checked there?

  28. I just got up at 5 a.m. before work, couldn't wait, did everything right. zip, the result was that the gray is still gray. It was a great process, easy, but so what, it does not work.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's a bummer! It definitely covered on my hair, which is very color resistant. I would assume the darker colors cover better, maybe that is it?

  30. Hi Kelly, My Walmart in Valley Stream does not sell it. I already tried. I even called the company customer care and they could not give me any answers except I should travel to New Jersey which would cost me well over $11 in tolls plus the cost of gas. I am nos sure why they are advertiseing this item and is not sold in all Walmarts.

  31. Hello....I googled Samy Fat Hair reviews and stumbled upon you. I purchased it yesterday and thought I better see what people are saying before I try it myself. It looks great on you....both times!!

I do have a suggestion so it doesn't fade so fast. Have you ever heard of or tried WEN by Chaz Dean? It is NOT shampoo, you use it instead of shampoo. No harsh chemicals are in there and it works to maintain your color :) Just thought I'd share that tip with you. Now I'm about to go give my own a whirl!! Thanks for sharing your experience. :)

  32. I used this today and am 99% happy with it - it dried my hair out a little too much - but love the results - covered my grey at the temples - which usually doesn't cover even when I leave other product on for a LONG time.

    Will definitely be using again.

  33. Just tried Dark Brown Samy for my dark brown hair that was showing a sprinking of gray....VERY HAPPY with the color and lack of red. My hair usually pulls red, even at the salon. Would recommend this for covering grays instead of a costly trip to the salon for single process! Hair texture feels fine....

FYI-The color of the foam shows up gradually. I was initially alarmed that the foam color was a very light brown.

  34. HORRIBLE , HORRIBLE, DAMAGED MY HAIR. MADE IT LIKE STRAW. HARD TO USE AND DOES NOT LAST. STILL HAVE DAMAGE AFTER 3 MONTHS. RUN AWAY FROM THIS STUFF.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I used this product this morning and am very pleased with the results. I left it on for 20 minutes after finishing applying as to help not dry out my hair.
I have fairly long hair with some grey at the part. I really like the color (medium brown) which I would recommend the medium brown even if you have quite dark hair. Hope it lasts a while. I will definitely use again when needed!

  36. I just put the Fat Foam colorant on my hair about ten minuts ago..a dark blonde color..so far no itching or reactions and it certainly does NOT driP..which is GREAT. I didn't see on the box that you can't use it while having menstration..?? I saw another lady posted that. Has anyone had a problem with that? Hope it comes out nice.

  37. I loved the dye... I was able to do it myself. I was so excited.I went back to Walmart and they didn't have them anymore. Does anyone know where I can find it.

  38. I searched for reviews on Samy Fat Foam color and found this.Your color looks great!

I used mine today and found it super easy to use - much easier than other brands I've used. The foam was much less messier and easier to evenly distribute.

It covered my grey very well; and I have quite resistant greys that have become a problem.

My hair does feel a little dry, but I think another deep conditioning and it will be back to normal.

I have read reports online of people having a hard time finding it - even at WalMarts that previously carried it...of course NOW I find it! I might have to go back and stock up!

  39. Thanks for the info and the step by step photos...this helped me alot. I have the exact same problem as you, stubborn grays...I am going to get a box of this tonight and try..

  40. I just tried the Samy Fat Foam, after being a slave to L'Oreal for years. I have to say, I am very happy as well!!! I was sooo nervous but the color looks fab, I'm a light golden brown girl. I, too, have trouble with very resistant gray. You should try a product called 'Gray Magic'. I got mine in Sally Beauty Supply, but I think they carry it in WalMart as well. You put in a few drops, read the directions, and it helps your gray take and hold the color better. It works for me!! Thanks for the review and happy coloring!!!

  42. I used Samy Fat Foam Hair Color back in November and then again in December 2010. I love it! It has been the only hair color that gets the stubborn grey hairs! I highlighted my hair last month and pulled it through a cap and today I am in the process of coloring again using my Fat Foam! Once again, perfection at its finest!!

I am not a hair stylist or even a person that considers herself savvy to the procedure, but this is error free and if you follow the directions and correctly time from the time you are done and not the time you began coloring, you too will be satisfied!!! (cc)

  43. I just bought the Samy Fat Foam in Light Blond - but I am afraid to use it because the warnings state not to use it while menstruating - and I am on my period. Does anyone know why it is not safe? Is it just for this type of hair color or any hair coloring product? Because I have colored my hair during "that time of the month" many times without any adverse effects.

  47. Did not work well for me at all. Grays came out a reddish brown instead of dark brown and hair felt like a horses tail after. Had contacted company before purchasing for advice on coloring for grays. Individual did not really know what they were talking about. Told me get a lighter color cause it could turn too dark (which is the exact opposite of what is true). When I contacted them with my results never received a reply. Guess they only like the good.

  50. I tried this product today and after reading the instructions that scared the bejeesus out of me, I went to the internet to see what others had to say about the product. I was still leary but decided to do it anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I mixed and applied the color and waited the appropriate amount of minutes. I continued reading the posts while I was waiting for it to develop. I paid particular attention to the one where conditioner was applied more than once after the shampoo and rinse out of the color. I'm glad I did read that one because I have pretty dry hair normally and that proved to be good advice.

Anyway my experience was no better or worse than with other colors. I noticed some of my grays were showing at the bottom of one ear, but I probably missed applying color to that spot. That's not a particularly noticeable spot on me, so I'm not too worried about it. As for the other grays, they are about as well colored as when I used Nice and Easy color foam recently. The color was pretty true to every other color I've ever used in that shade, which is 8N (Medium Blonde). My hair did feel dry while it was wet, so I applied some left over Nice and Easy conditioner a couple of more times and rinsed it out until it felt less stiff. My biggest complaint with this product is that it felt grainy in the hair and seemed very hard to wash out. I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt though and see if the color lasts longer than other products I have used. If not, I'll probably go back to Nice and Easy or L'Oreal because they have easier applicators to use and are great products. I didn't like the container to mix the product in the Fat Foam at all.

I have shoulder link hair and only used about half the application. It had totally saturated my hair at that point, and I figured using the whole amount might damage my already dry hair more.

So my recommendation would be to give it a try, but don't expect miracles. You may or may not have as good, better or worse experience than the one I had.

If anyone at Fat Foam is reading this blog, I think they should put the warnings on the product, but I think they went way overkill. Practically every page I read seemed to have them on there. Those warnings may scare away customers.

  51. Sir; I tried Samys Fat Foam Hair Coloring for the first time today & found it to be the best hair coloring I've ever used in my life. I'm 68 now so I know whereof I speak. This coloring is just SUPER GREAT. I defininately will use it again. It left my hair in wonderful condition & so soft & natural in color & texture.

  54. I tried this product last week and was very satisfied with the results!  The color was rich and realistic in comparison to pix on box.  After using the shampoo and conditioner that come with the product, my hair was softer, shinier and looked healthier than it did before.  I have stubborn grays which normally elude the color and I end up with a few strays; but all my grays were covered and I'm very happy overall.  Already planning to buy my next box so I have it ready for next application.  When I saw the magazine ad it intrigued me but the main reason I tried it (other than the seemingly easy and convenient way to apply the product) was because I've heard of Sammy since I lived in NYC in the 80's...  and  it's all been associated with quality results since.  Definitely recommend this product to anyone - Can't wait to use it again!  If you have very long hair you probably should buy two boxes which might be the case with any brand you buy...  Enjoy!

  56. Hi ML!
I would buy it online from a store like drugstore.com or Walmart.com. Are you sure your shade was R6? There is an R5 listed everywhere, but no R6. This originally launched with 10 shades and now appears to have 12 shades. Drugstore.com sells all of them, but no R6.
