Brazilian Peel: Serious Peel or Seriously Average?

Ever notice that you have no problem sauntering into Sephora and picking up 2 eyeliners, a mascara and a blush with no issues whatsoever, but you'll anguish over an $80 skincare purchase?

You're not alone. I am wracked with guilt when I look at spending that much money on one item. I'll blame my depression era father (he had me later in life) for that one. But what about $20 for an at-home peel ? That seems more reasonable, right? I've tested a lot of these. Some work while others fail. So let's take a look at the Brazilian Peel and see if it's for you.

This peel offers a 30% Glycolic peel that is self-neutralizing (you can't hurt yourself) and can be used safely at home. Different acid peels perform differently, depending on how they are buffered, neutralized, etc. I've had 30% Glycolic peels done in spas and have ended up with a little peeling and redness, which was the plan. Then I've had other peels with the same Glycolic content that haven't done a tremendous amount.

The Brazilian Peel comes with 4 pre-measured applicators. You take off the end of the applicator, press the plunger and put the product into the palm of your hand. Then you spread it evenly on your face, neck and decollete and wait ten minutes. Then you carefully rinse the product off of your skin and hopefully, reveal, fresher, younger looking skin. According to the company, to get maximum results, you should do this weekly.

I should start by saying that my skin is not sensitive. In fact, it is de-sensitized to peels somewhat because I have done so many of them. So keep that in mind as we continue.

After I applied the mask for the first time, it felt warm, but I did not experience any burning or itching, as I usually do when I apply a strong acid. I asked my esthetician amiga, Madeleine Homes from La Papillon, if this meant it wasn't working. She assured me that different acid peels are buffered different ways and will feel differently on the skin.

So how did it work for me?

I didn't experience any discomfort from the peel, which I know is a concern for many people.
I did see a slight brightening of skin.
My skin did feel slightly more smooth.
I did not experience any redness or swelling.

If you have sensitive skin or skin that is not accustomed to strong chemical peels, this peel will most likely deliver excellent results.

If you have skin that is used to stronger peels, then you may not experience a huge benefit. I did not see any lightening of scars or melasma and my skin felt only slightly smoother, as if I had used a Clarisonic.

Want to try it? Pick up the Brazilian Peel for $78 for four peels. Have you used this? What did you think? Does this compare to spa-grade peels or is this just so-so? Tell me in the comments!

  1. I really like this peel. However, I think the results are cumulative --I've been using it once a week and like the results--true it hasn't lightened my bown spots, but the texture of my skin has improved.

  2. I am a spa junkie and an at home peel user and I was actually impressed with this peel (got a sample in the VIB hat box recently).  I found my skin actually peeled better than with some of the more high brow spa peels I've had and my skin was noticeably nicer looking.
