The Urban Spectrum Palette Packaging Is Great (Or Is It?)

Purchased by me. Contains affiliate links.

Hey there little sisters! So two days ago, when I said this about how to spend your money? Yeah, well, I lied. Remember last fall, when sneaks of the Urban Spectrum Palette came out? It's in stores now and you might just want to grab it (it's limited). The packaging is a big change, even from the most recent Gwen palette. I love the look but there are a few drawbacks, depending on your tastes.

Instead of the usual hinged or cardboard palette, this palette comes in a box that is most certainly going to double as a sweet spot to stash your treasures after using/depotting the shadows.

The box itself is 13.5 inches, square, and 1 inch tall. The bottom of the palette is a shiny gunmetal, while the die cut top is matte. The only downside to the packaging is that it's possible/likely you'll eventually ding the hades out of a few of the shadows. So handle with care until you get the hang of it.

You should also be aware that anything and everything that touches the matte top is going to show. Finger prints, specks of dust, shadow; it's all going to stick. It's easy to clean, but if you are one of those people who hate fingerprints on palettes, this is going to make you nuts. Which category do you fall into?

As for me? I'm sold. I don't care about dust or fingerprints. It's gorgeous. There's also a mirror on the flip side of the top. It's kind of a great size for travel and is certainly easier than lifting the entire palette if you need a mirror.

Interested in more than just the box? The Urban Spectrum has fifteen shades, only five of which are "just-released". It also includes four top-selling shades from their current collection and six returning favorites from past palettes.

Shadows included are as follows:

Protest (golden forest green shimmer)
Junkie (green teal shimmer)
Deep End (bright teal shimmer)
Madness (bright metallic blue shimmer with micro-glitter)
Evidence (deep navy blue shimmer)
Prank (deep navy matte with turquoise pearl)
Omen (bright metallic purple with blue shift)
NEW Flashback (bright deep purple with pink sparkle)
Voodoo (metallic purple shimmer with micro-glitter)
NEW Flatline (metallic pale pink)
Bordello (pale mauve shimmer with micro-glitter)
NEW Backlash (bright pink with orange pearl)
NEW Daybreak (soft bronze with silver glitter)
NEW Burn (medium golden brown shimmer)
West (medium golden brown shimmer)

I can't be bothered to look through and see how many of these shadows I already own. The whole presentation is too gorgeous to care. Sure, it's a little bit more work to remove the top (and put it down) than just flipping up a lid, but who cares. Will the unavoidable smudges stop you from buying or is it already in your cart? :-)

Available at Sephora, $55.00, Limited Edition.

  1. The biggest issue I have with the box is that it's hard to pick up out of a drawer without only grabbing the lid. I am perpetually terrified of dropping it... but then I remember how gorgeous it is and forgive its transgressions. :P

    1. RIGHT? I'm worried about dropping it as well. I worry about dropping everything (I'm a klutz), but this would be really easy...still. It's gorgeous.

  3. This is just about my favorite eyeshadow palette ever. I love the packaging. I think it is beautiful, even though not the most practical. It looks really pretty on display. I'll travel with something else.
