So many of my friends in the Lipstick League have been raving about Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab forever, but I had yet to jump on their dark carriage. Until now. BPAL makes amazing perfume oils that will transport you from your first inhalation. All fragrances are designed and hand blended by Elizabeth Barrial or Brian Constantine, who have been making scents inspired by anthropology and folklore for the last fifteen years. Imagine a company that is part mystical, part do-gooder with a penchant for fantastical lore and a twist of dark curiosity and you've got Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.
When you first arrive at their site, it's almost overwhelming. They have hundreds of scents that vary from sweet and light to extremely dark. It's easy to get lost in their collections and descriptions. Each one is more fanciful and darkly delicious than the next. If you're like me and get lost easily, starting with a collection of Imp's Ears is for you. Imp's Ears are tiny vials for $4 each or six for $22. It's a great way to experiment and perhaps, to sample the vicissitudes of ancient folklore and fantasy. Check out the collections of Imp's Ears or purchase singles as you peruse the shop.
I selected 51 for my first BPAL oil. It's described as
Luminescent, glowing, and otherworldly: green mandarin, neroli, honeydew, white amber, guava, freesia, white and green musks hovering over desert scrub, smashed wood, and the dry, biting scent of night air over the Groom Lake salt flats.
If, like me, you are new to Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, start by searching for your favorite base or top note. I promise you'll fall gently down the rabbit hole of stories and scents while searching for a smell to complete your mood.
Do you have a favorite? What should I try next? Inspire me!
