Getting Out of My Own Style Rut: Switching Up the Colors

The way some people love taupe's, I love peaches. Whole blogs are dedicated to loving the color taupe and Gouldylox is a few steps away from being dedicated to my pursuit of the perfect peach. (Only from time to time, though. My addiction is still under control. Last February, it was especially bad, as you may recall.) So with that in mind, I set out to see if I can be comfortable in something I would never try. Since I'm always urging you to try new things, I figured it was time to take my own advice and try something new. Something completely un-peach. I decided to try pinky-purples.

Yeah, I know. Big deal. But I really don't wear them. I really never have. Sure, I've found a few that I like from time to time, but I always go back to my standard issue Chanel Cashmere color, or one of the hundreds of peaches that make up my collection.  I'll switch up my shadow every day, but changing my lip color scheme kind of gives me the creeps. It's oddly and totally out of my comfort zone.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how people get stuck in ruts, no matter if its lipsticks, hairstyles or jobs, and how this holds us back. We see ourselves so differently from how others see us and we are no doubt our harshest critics.

After a lot of searching, I found few I could live with. And one that I love. It's shockingly bright, but I like it. A makeup artist said it would look amazing on me and honestly, I thought she was on crack. But it turns out I love it. It's the new Violet Rain from Estee Lauder. It's out of my comfort zone and I'm certain people are looking at me strangely from time to time, but I love it. (The gloss, not the looks.) Although every time I write about it, it makes me sing about "Chocolate Rain," which honestly irks the beejeezels out of me. No matter, I love this color unconditionally. And the formula is amazing. It lasts for hours, fades nicely and is so sticky it's not sticky. If that makes sense.

In what rut are you stuck? Have you ever tried to make a big change? Tell me all about it in the comments!

I bought this and Molten Honey because I can't live without them.

  3. Yes, Kelly, Purple Rain would be appropriate ;) Good for you, taking a color risk! It did pay off---it looks terrific. Not my cup of tea, tho. My skin is way too light.

  7. I love this color! I love brights. I love fuchsias/hot pinks, teals and purples the way some love taupes.

  8. Big, big kudos to you for jumping out of that comfort zone.  I keep trying but haven't gotten there yet.  I am a peach/pink/coral person myself and my eyeballs just can't acclimate the purples and really bright colors.  Right now, I just really dislike they way they look.  Maybe one day I will break free....

I'm stuck in a nude and natural tones rut. I'm trying to wear more colors but I feel like a clown most of the time!
