Emmi-Dent Ultrasonic Toothbrush Means No More Brushing Your Teeth

I'm one of the bloggers that is always game for weird things. Home laser? Micro needling? I'm your girl. But you may have noticed, I don't write about teeth bleaching kits.  My teeth are not strong. I grew up on well water, which means no fluoride. My teeth have been described as "Hershey Kisses in the sun" and my jaw was once described as "bull*hit". (My jaw is really unrelated to well water, but it's the only other weird comment I've gotten about my mouth from a dental professional.) So imagine me with teeth like Johnny Rotten, circa 1972. Sure, mine are straight and look ok in the front, but they are a hot mess once you get up in there.

So, I'm wary of damaging them further with bleaching trays unless my dentist okays them. You never know how something is going to affect your teeth until it's too late. And since I don't relish the idea of dentures and I can't afford a permanent fancy flipper, I do my best to keep mine intact.

When the makers of Emmi-dent Ultrasonic Toothbrush contacted me to try their fancy toothbrush, I was game. This toothbrush is different because you don't really use it to brush your teeth. Weird, right? Instead, you hold the brush next to your teeth for 8-10 seconds. Then you move the brush to the next spot on your teeth, working all around the front and back of all of your teeth. I have to say this right now. It feels weird to not actually brush your teeth, but that was the assignment.

I was told that people had seen amazing stain-removing results, as well as getting out problems below the gum line. Since you don't actually brush, I was skeptical. I was hoping for the best, but was ready to accept this as another beauty gadget in a shiny box that isn't worth the cost of reflective printing on the outside of the box.

Before I begin, let's talk a little about why you might want to consider this toothbrush. Here are three great reasons from the manufacturer:

The tooth cleaning and oral hygiene have a triple benefit when using an oral ultrasound cleaning device (such as Emmi-dent):

1) It gently cleans the tooth surfaces, between the teeth, periodontal pockets and fissures with a lasting effect. After the ultrasound cleaning, put your tongue on your teeth – the surface feels extremely smooth, because the plaque and other contaminants have been removed.

2) It acts prophylactically – the antibacterial effect of ultrasound removes the plaque and tartar; inflammation cannot occur.

3) It has a therapeutic effect, i.e. when a patient develops an inflammation such as periodontitis, aphthous ulcers, etc. Within a few days the inflammation can be reduced or cured by destroying the bacteria causing the infection.

The effect of Emmi-dent oral hygiene with ultrasound is noticeable after the first application. Your teeth feel as though they have just been professionally cleaned.

I was specifically interested in this product because I am concerned repeated bleaching has made my enamel thinner than it should and I already have not-so-strong teeth. The idea of something that didn't use abrasives or chemicals to whiten teeth totally appealed to me.

So Loxy and I tested it by brushing with it every day for a month. It comes with two toothbrush heads, a nifty charging stand and a small tube of toothpaste. I should mention that you have to use to the toothpaste the Emmi-dent comes with.  You have no choice. It's the combo of the super fast ultrasonic motion of the brush and the nano-bubbles created by the toothpaste that make this brush work.

Loxy quit after day two. He couldn't get used to not "brushing" his teeth. Too much change makes for an unhappy Loxy.  And no one likes that.

(It moves so quickly, you can't even see it. I don't know why I'm sighing so dramatically.)

However,  after several days, I saw a dramatic improvement in the whiteness of my teeth. I also noticed that the (high gross out factor warning) gum pocket on one tooth was now "empty" and no longer captured excess tooth gunk.

There is a small downside, however. While it makes your teeth feel super slick and look pearly, it doesn't do much for your breath. You are not going to be giving up your mouthwash anytime soon. But for me, whiter teeth are worth an extra bit of mouthwash. Plus I like to use it anyway.

The best part is that my teeth are no longer stained and I am not relying an enamel-damaging abrasives or chemicals. That is wonderful news as far as I'm concerned! My teeth don't look Hollywood white or over bleached. They aren't sensitive or in danger of being damaged by whitening treatments. They look naturally as white as they were intended. Way before I ever started a vicious diet soda habit...

  9. I am interested in getting one of these, I use a little ultrasonic cleaner for jewellery and stuff, but the nano-bubbles in that little beauty only requires water. No special liquid. I wonder if the 'nano-bubble paste' is really for the taste (and profit for the company)?

  18. My mom is well into her 90s and due to her vigilance in oral hygiene still has all her own teeth! Due to a stroke several years ago, she has trouble brushing her teeth thoroughly and this sounds like it would be an excellent choice for her.  Hope I can win one for her.
