How To Look Five Years Younger Today

(Barbara Walters and I both love a good  fuzzy filter. That 80's hair was something else.)

Since I'm always chatting with pros, I've been compiling a bunch of tips and tricks on how to look several years younger. While not all of them will make you look like your high school photo (thank the gods I don't look like mine), a few of them together will make a real difference. If I miss anything, tell me your favorite trick in the comments!

Overall, you need to soften the lines. You know how Barbara Walters looks fuzzy in interviews while Netanyahu looks crisp and clear? That's because they are using a soft focus lens to blur the imperfections. How does this apply to you, who is most likely not living in front of a camera on a reality show? Easy. Just follow some of the tips below and you'll be looking younger ASAP!

Ditch the harsh powder. If you must wear powder to set your makeup, make sure it is finely milled, like Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish or Make Up For Ever's HD Microfinish Powder. Even better, switch to one of the new silicone-based face perfectors, like ones by Mally Beauty or Dior.

Try adding a luminizing booster to your foundation.  I love adding Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector to my foundation for a major radiance boost. If that is too much radiance for you, try adding some Freshface Glow from Fresh to your foundation. A little mixed with your liquid foundation will add a gorgeous glow to your skin, softening fine lines and adding back the radiance that we lose as we age.

While we're talking foundation, look for one that contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring hydrator that plumps lines instantly. Anne from Beauty Xpose and I really like Estee Lauder's Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme Radiant Lifting Makeup SPF15.

Blend those lines! Skip the really harsh liner and smudge it out. Make sure your shadow is blended really well and consider adding a flattering skin tone shade (I love French Vanilla by Trish McEvoy) above your darkest shadow color to soften the blend. Is smudging your pencil liner proving tricky? Try Smashbox's Soft Effects Powder Liner. It's easy, long lasting and klutz-proof.

Change your lip color to something lighter, glossier and fresher. It'll feel odd at first, but the change will brighten up your face and the glossy sheen will make your eyes brighter. If you love dark mulberry, try a lighter berry shade. Reds can opt for a glossy orange/bronze or pink. Clinique Butter Shines are amazing for this very thing. If you are still wearing a brown lipstick, you need an intervention. Opt for something soft and pretty, like Sephora's Ultra Vinyl Lip Pencil in Sweet Beige.

(I know this Dame isn't your Grammy, but you get the idea. Softer hair color ages you less than harsh hair color.)

Soften your hair color. That adorable tow-headed blonde or Wonder Woman black that defined you in your twenties may now be adding to your age and making you look harsh.  Try adding a slightly warmer tone to blonde hair. Honey colors are still gorgeous and will make you look polished, age appropriate and younger. Or go a delicate platinum, like Glenn Close. Just avoid harsh highlights and overly yellow tones. Ultra dark colors can also make you look older than you are, pointing out that you really color your hair. Try a deep chestnut with some dimension to soften and shave years off of your appearance. And reds, you have to be careful too! Stay away from the darker plummy reds and the lighter orangey colors. As your hair thins, the color shows its faux self, giving you Grandma hair. While we all love our Bubbe's, chances are, we don't want their hair!
While we're talking hair, make sure to treat your hair to deep conditioning treatments to keep it in tip top shape. If your locks can't take the length, don't be afraid to go a little shorter. I've been advised of my own hair that "all hair has an expiration date - when it can't grow past a certain point and look good." While I'm terrified of hitting that length (I'm still growing and hoping for another six inches) I know that healthy hair looks better any day that straggly longer hair.

While it won't happen in one day, give Avon three days using their new Advance Techniques 3D Rescue Leave-In Treatment. According to the product, in three days you can fix three years of damage.  I don't know about three years of damage, but this definitely helped the ends of my hair look healthier and gave it all a little more swing (my ends tend to get tangled, making my hair not have a lot of movement at the bottom in between cuts). The best part? It's under $10.

And don't forget to add some shine! I love Cutler's Shine Treatment, Kerastase Chroma Cristal and Alterna's Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil. A little goes a long way, but it camouflages damaged hair and gives it an instant healthy pick-me-up.

Finally, try an at-home face treatment. I'm practically an at-home peel pro and while they can seem scary, they don't have to be. Even just a great exfoliator or mask can make all of the difference in the world. I've tried all of these and love them all.

BeautyRX Skincare By Dr. Schultz Advanced Exfoliating Therapy Pads are no joke. These strong pads contain 10% glycolic acid for quick results, at just a little more than $1 per use. Just be sure to follow the directions - it's extra important this time.

Naive Beauty Magnet Eyes Under Eye Algae Masks will make your eyes look refreshed for several hours. They are perfect for special events and every day.

YBF's Prep hands down beats all of the other exfoliators I have tried. If you are looking for a serious, manual exfoliator, look no further.

jeune d'รขge 5% Glycolic Pumpkin Peel is full of antioxidants, nutrients, Vitamins B, C and E and a protein that provides essential fatty acids. It will make your skin glow!

Caudalie's VINOPERFECT Radiance Revealing Mask delivers instant hydration and radiance that lasts for hours.

Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel will make a difference after just one use. At essentially $10 each, it's a total bargain!
